Announcing the BP Profile Video Widget for BuddyPress

Slushman publishes the BP Profile Video Widget plugin, which displays a YouTube or Vimeo video on your BuddyPress profile.

I recently published a new BuddyPress plugin in the WordPress directory: BP Profile Video Widget. While working on the Towermix Network for Belmont University‘s Curb College, they wanted a way for the users to show off their work, specifically, videos they’ve made or been in. I put together this widget that displays a video from either YouTube or Vimeo. You can download it from the WordPress Plugin Directory. You can read up on the plugin, it’s features, and get the FAQ on the plugin’s page.

  1. Great plugin – just what I am looking for – however I cant get it to work.  I created the fields, and your can click the URL from the Profile page – but in the sidebar it says “This user has not activated their video player.” – Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

  2. Hi, it says multiple instances possible on the wordpress summary, but I’m not sure how to specify the settings for the second player. Any advice?

    1. Hey Persecutusasperati, I’m going to have to change that description then, I’m sorry for that.  When I was learning the code for widgets, they explained that the way I was using could allow for multiple instances, but with the way the code works currently, there’s no way to actually have a second instance.  Maybe at some point, I’ll add that in, but for now, I’ll update that description.  Sorry about that!

  4. Hi guys, also having the same problem as Scott Brenton below! ”
This user has not activated their video player.” displays on my sidebar for some reason.

Don’t suppose anyone found a solution for this? Be great to get the plugin up and running! Suggestions welcome.

    1. Hey Dan,
The plugin requires the fields to be named EXACTLY as they are in the readme file.  Did you use the exact field name in the readme file?  I’ll be working on an update soon that will create these fields for you, so you wouldn’t have to worry about such things, but I haven’t had a chance to work on it just yet.

  5. Hello Slushman, great plug in.. Can you add pending authorization link video field from administrator? Because i need this function for control add video user  profile.
    Thank you so much!

    1. Still looking for an answer on this. Most people are using the SHARE button – the URL needs to be either of the two ways I listed below for the widget to work. Also, if the member hasn’t placed a video in there – there should be some type of code that says, if the field is empty – do not put the widget on THEIR PAGE at all. But instead it shows the user hasn’t activated that feature.

      1. Hey 3212go,
I’m looking at this today.  Will try to get a patch out soon.  WP actually has support for embedding videos from a ton of other sources (including the the new youtube shortened URLs), so I’m looking into how to use their stuff instead of doing it all from scratch (like I have been).  In which case, this plugin would be able to post videos from quite a few more sources.  I’ll let you know as soon I get this worked out.I don’t know that the widget can disappear one a person’s page, but I’ll look into that too.   If that doesn’t work out, would it be better to be able to customize that message?

        1. I REALLY REALLY need this to work ASAP! It’s holding up the launch of my network. This is the only part not working properly. The URL is very important and having it NOT appear if no one enters a video code is also important. That looks very weird to have it sitting there like that without content. Thank you.

          1. Version 0.2 should be out soon, I just published the update.  Sorry, bug squashing sometimes takes longer than you think.  Good luck with your network.  Feel free to post a link back here, I’d love to see your work.

          2. Will it be in the repository soon? Or is it on your site now? I am using both of your plugins and having a hard time finding two others that might work the same as you two product – one for members to add a custom images and one providing them with their own text box on their page to put content into. Would it be hard to make these? If so, I might ask out on eLance. Your’s are working pretty good on mysite.

          3. I’m not sure how the custom header image one would work, but the other one should be easy enough.  I could probably modify one of mine to do just that.  I’ll take a look this afternoon and see what I can come up with.

          4. BP Profile Text Widget is ready and should be in the repository in a few.  Have fun.

          5. Yikes! It’s still labeled “Video”! I’ve been watching since last night and just realized that the title says Video and Not Text! You might want to change that. Send me your email on my Twitter @the_weblady so I can send the link when I am ready.

          6. Looks like that was super easy.  I’ve applied to have it hosted in the WordPress plugin directory, I’ll post it as soon as I get permission and I’ll let you know when its ready.

          7. Got it and it worked. Follow my other Twitter account @The_Weblady:disqus , I’ll follow you back so I can invite you to the website when I am done. Thank you so much!!!!

          8. I’d love to try it in Beta if you can. What I’ve done is used a theme that allows custom sidebars. I created a sidebar for the member pages, added the fields like instructed and this and the video plugin works great.

          9. ****UPDATE – ERROR**** I installed it but now – above the video in the widget column – there are two lines of TEXT:

            ServTest: youtube
            Service: Youtube

How can I get these two lines of text to go away?

          10. GAH!  That was some bug-hunting lines I put there.  Sorry, version 0.21 should be out in 15 minutes or so and it removes those lines.

    1. Hey Spencer, I just put out version 0.3 today that includes YouTube short URL support, Facebook video embedding, and it also eliminates the need for the Service field, the plugin will auto-detect the service (I should have done this from the beginning!).  It worked nicely in my testing today, let me know if it works for you too.
